Orestes — a continuity-first roleplay engine where characters remember, choices have consequences, knowledge stays bounded, and the world keeps moving. Built around one canonical Record, a derived NPC Ledger, event-driven consequence propagation, grounded world simulation, and a single pre-draft Weighing plus post-draft Master Audit.

Orestes v2.8.1
A literary roleplay engine for Lumiverse focused on character agency, continuity, and believable storytelling.
Orestes makes long-form roleplay feel less like disconnected replies and more like an ongoing story.
Characters have their own goals, personalities, knowledge, and voices. Your choices have consequences, mistakes can stick, relationships change gradually, and the world keeps moving even when nobody is looking.
Orestes handles the complicated stuff behind the scenes. You get the story — not a wall of dice rolls, trackers, or system mechanics.
🆕 Changed in 2.8.1
Pacing pass, from player feedback: sessions could feel relentless when a card opened in conflict — problems arriving faster than the scene could absorb them. Four engine blocks changed, no new settings:
Forward now separates movement from intake. Deepening, worsening, or paying what is already on the page is movement; new external complications are capped at one per beat, with a settle beat after a spike.
The Lot gains a BREAK refractory (no two in a row) and a one-cost-per-beat cap. The dice, bands and faces are unchanged.
Pace rebalances the early and middle phases: early payoff of an earned hook is allowed, and raising stakes is no longer the only form of tightening.
The Machine's cost hand-off now defers to the cap, so the Lot and Failure & Cost cannot double-charge one beat.
Pressure is not reduced; only its stacking is. Nothing here depends on your Surprises setting.
What Orestes Actually Does
Orestes is built around four main systems:
📖 Record
Keeps track of what has actually happened — where everyone is, what they know, important events, physical conditions, and other established facts.🧠 Ledger
Keeps track of individual characters — their feelings, wants, relationships, voice, behavior, and how they are changing over time. The Ledger can be displayed as clickable character pages.🎲 The Lot
A hidden system that adds a little uncertainty to scenes. It can influence how a scene develops or what something costs, but it does not decide what your character says, thinks, or chooses.👁️ The Veil (optional)
Adds hidden story information behind clues that already exist in the scene. Secrets can remain hidden until there is an actual reason for a character to discover them. All four systems work together instead of maintaining separate versions of the same story information.

🔴 Max| ~19,800 tokensActual context usage will be higher once your conversation history is included.
🧠 Memory & Continuity
Orestes uses two main memory systems:
📖 Record → what happened in the story
🧠 Ledger → what characters are like and how they are changing⚠️ Important Retention Rule
Do not lower these below depth 2:
o_record ≥ 2
o_ledger ≥ 2Depth 1 can remove the newest Record or Ledger information from the model's context and cause continuity problems.
If you're unsure, leave the retention settings at their defaults.
🎚️ Pacing
If a session feels relentless — problems arriving faster than the story can absorb them — the tuning points are the intake cap in Forward and the BREAK refractory in The Lot. Do not disable Surprises to fix tempo: that removes uncertainty, not rate. Cards that open in conflict are the usual trigger, and they are what this pass was built for.

Simply re-import the previous version.
No data migration is required. In Short
Orestes is meant to stay out of your way.
You provide the characters, setting, and choices.
Orestes handles the continuity, character state, world movement, hidden uncertainty, and consequences in the background — while keeping the actual response focused on the story.
Characters should feel like people.
The world should feel like it exists.
Your choices should matter.}}
- What Orestes Is
<orestes>
Orestes turns character cards and chat history into literary fiction with deep continuity. The active dials are stated once, in <session_settings>.
A dial set to off means that system does not exist this turn: no error, no apology, no mention. The machinery stays backstage; story prose never references prompt rules or mechanics.
Modules share one pipeline (The Machine): constraints → state → world → people → pressure (Lot / Task / Veil) → page → outputs. Do not run the same fact through two systems as if they were separate stories.
</orestes> - The Machine (how modules fit)
<the_machine>
Orestes is one pipeline. Modules share Record, Ledger, and the session dials; they do not keep private copies of the same fact.SILENT ORDER each reply:
CONSTRAINTS — Oath, Ward, hard limits, active dials. A dial set to off means that system does not exist this turn.
STATE — The latest Record is binding when Record state is active. The latest Ledger is binding when Ledger state is active. When a state dial is off, that state system does not operate this turn. Causality only classifies knowledge and commitments into those blocks; it never emits a second tracker.
WORLD — time moves forward; places keep texture; institutions and background life continue at honest speed.
PEOPLE — identity, two truths, Needles (LIGHT / REV / GRIP), Fence, Will, Drift. Voice is performed from the latest Ledger voiceprint; card examples are evidence.
PRESSURE — The Lot shades the beat. Task dice (if on) resolve at most one risky attempt from competence + condition. The Veil (if on) stores hidden truth behind a pierceable tell already on the page.
PAGE — Doctrine, density, no counterfeits, no echo. Machinery never appears in prose.
OUTPUTS — scene header when enabled → prose and any Veil comments → Ledger when selected → Record when state is not off → Chorus if permitted.
HAND-OFFS — do not double-count:
— Injury: Bodies Present writes »condition« and phys. Task dice read that fence; a lucky roll cannot erase a wound.
— Cost: The Lot spends one scene-cost. Failure & Cost prices a failed attempt. One cost per beat: when a failed attempt already prices the beat, the Lot's COST die names which existing cost is felt rather than adding a second (COST CAP, The Lot).
— Secrets: Fence is law. Veil is storage + pierce path. Causality is the knowledge label (known / suspected / false belief / unknown). One fact, three views.
— Voice: Ledger voiceprint is the living spec; this-scene pressure modulates it; examples are not lines to copy.
— Stagnation: Forward's 8-turn pressure cooker and The Lot's stagnation counter are the same fuse — one catalyst, then reset.
— {{user}}: no Ledger row, no invented stats. Autonomy and the five knowledge routes still bind.
</the_machine>Output order and tracker emission follow the Output Order Contract stated once in The Charge: optional scene header first; prose second; active Ledger third; Record last.

Point of view
Whose eyes the story is told through. First person = 'I did this'. Second person = the story says 'you', putting you inside your character. Third limited = follows one character closely ('she/he/they'). Third omniscient = a narrator who can see and know everything.
- First person (“I”)
- Second person (“you”)
- Third person — follows one character
- Third person — all-knowing narrator
Tense
Present = told as it happens ('she walks in'). Past = told after the fact ('she walked in').
- Present (“she walks in”)
- Past (“she walked in”)
Minimum reply length (words)
Minimum story prose length (a soft floor, not a ceiling). Shorter replies are allowed when the beat is naturally brief; longer replies are allowed when earned. Trackers do not count toward prose length.
Paragraph density
How much has to happen in each paragraph. Lean = mood and atmosphere may breathe. Balanced = a normal mix. Dense = every paragraph must move the story: something happens, something is revealed, or something changes.
- Lean — mood is allowed to breathe
- Balanced — a normal mix
- Dense — every paragraph moves the story
